Raise the curtain!
A gallery exhibition that takes place at New Horizons International Film Festival in Wroclaw.
The starting point for the Raise the curtain! exhibition is the tradition of British burlesque - understood as an aesthetic of grassroots resistance and subversion. Masquerade, grotesque, bold humour and eroticism – all are tools used for fun, but also instruments for challenging the established order. Burlesque inverts the codes of high culture, used by the elites for disciplining society. Burlesque challenges the norms of good taste, propriety, and restraint; it challenges the symbolic structures of power. The exhibition explores how the burlesque tradition echoes at the intersection of contemporary British visual arts and club culture, and how its instruments, tropes and codes are reinterpreted by artists in the context of new emancipatory discourses developing in a post-national society of diversity.
