As part of the MultiCulture Britain series, the British Council and Multikino invite you to a rebroadcast of the play Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch.
Oscar-nominated Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC series "Sherlock," "Game of Secrets," "Frankenstein" broadcast to theaters in the NT Live series) plays the title role in Shakespeare's great tragedy. Directed by Lyndsey Turner and produced by Friedman Productions Sonia, the play was broadcast from the Barbican Theatre to cinemas across Europe and beyond on October 15, 2015 and broke all records for popularity among such broadcasts. The Shakespearean tragedy became the fastest-selling event in London theater history. All tickets for the anticipated performances sold out before rehearsals at the theater began.
The play was already hailed as an event, due to the acting and visual setting of the staging, full of panache. Since the premiere, the actors who starred in "Hamlet" have become internationally recognised for their participation in the "Game of Thrones" series. Ciarán Hinds, playing the role of Claudius, Hamlet's uncle, is known for his role as Mance, the king behind the wall.
The staging brings the story of Hamlet into our modern times to emphasise the continuing relevance of Shakespeare's masterpiece. It also places great emphasis on the political and espionage themes contained in the play. Old Hamlet, the powerful King of Denmark, Hamlet's father, dies in unexplained circumstances. The crown is seized by his brother Claudius. The king's widow, Gertrude, Hamlet's mother, quickly gives her hand to the usurper. Hamlet suspects his uncle of conspiracy. As the country prepares for war, the princely family disintegrates. Compelled to avenge his father's death, yet paralyzed by the task before him, Hamlet defies his position, acting against reason and the safety of the country.
