Portrait of the Queen, an event-documentary that not only features Elizabeth II’s lengthy reign, but also shows how photography, a seemingly "mute" art, has paid an exceptional tribute to the Queen, by creating a seventy-year-long album, unique in the world for its variety, intensity and richness.
The film enters cinemas on the first anniversary of her death and tells the story of The Queen from a totally new perspective: through the most intense, amazing, revealing photographic portraits of her.
Over seventy years of reign have been examined - with discretion - through the lenses of amazing photographers. From the very first portraits in Marcus Adams’ plain, innocent style, to the more formal sophistication shown by Cecil Beaton, Tony Armstrong-Jones, photographer and brother-in-law, who became Lord Snowdon, Jousuf Karsh, and the work of superstars such as contemporary photographers Brian Aris, Jason Bell, Julian Calder, David Montgomery and John Swannell, up to the 2000s, when Chris Levine definitively celebrated the Queen’s image with her eyes closed.
Portrait of the Queen is a cinematic documentary directed by Fabrizio Ferri, also director of photography, based on the book published by Mondadori, Elisabetta II: Ritratto di Regina written by Paola Calvetti who also wrote the screenplay.
