The concert featuring Mark Padmore, one of the most valued tenors of our time, will present works by Rebecca Clarke and Benjamin Britten. The artists will perform four songs by Clarke, which are excellent examples of her experiments in searching for her own language in the context of expanded tonality. There will also be works from the Romantic period by Franz Schubert, who often drew inspiration from traditional Austrian folk songs. The evening will end with a performance of Winter Words op. 52, a cycle of eight songs to words by Thomas Hardy, composed by Benjamin Britten. Their main theme is the thought of losing innocence when consciousness is shaped, as well as motifs related to time and human transience. Britten depicts them in the score using exceptionally simple, yet sonically effective techniques that introduce the listener to a nostalgic mood.
